Application Process

Page history last edited by Hadley 6 years, 11 months ago

We are seeking students of all levels for this REU site.  At the bare minimum, we require each student to provide a number of materials (more details below), but also be in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program and have taken Chemistry and Calculus-based Physics before the start date.  STEM programs are loosely defined and can range from pre-engineering programs at Tribal Colleges or Community Colleges to science programs like environmental sciences.

You MUST be a US citizen (natural or otherwise) and must not graduate before April 2018.

Skills like programming are desired, but not required in any context.  Any required programming skills will be developed as demanded by the project.

At the first stage of the process, you are to provide the following by March 3rd (however, we WILL accept application material after this date):

  • An application form (attached)
  • An up to date, but unofficial transcripts
  • A reference letter from one faculty member describing your skills, abilities, and motivations
  • A one page essay describing why you want to come to the REU site
    • Identify specific projects you are interested in and why
    • Your interest in modeling as a research field
    • Your personal career goals (to become an engineer at Dow Chemical, work at NASA, etc....)
    • What you hope to get out of the REU site and this experience

NOTE: we have found our 10 candidates, so we are no longer accepting applications.  Thank you for your interest and we encourage you to apply next year.

Email all materials (except the reference letter) with the subject heading (TEAMS REU application) to Lori Litzen (lori.litzen@sdsmt.edu).

In mid March, we will down-select candidates for phone interviews.  After these are finished, we will allocate students to projects as appropriate, and contact the students immediately afterwards.

You may apply after March 3rd, but all applications submitted before will be fully considered.  After the 3rd we will consider candidates unless we have chosen 10 officially, so please apply even if it is after the 3rd.

If you have more questions, contact the site administration (kevin.hadley@sdsmt.edu).
